On 16th July 2011 Clan Line hauled “The Blackmore Vale Express”, a UK Railtours charter train, to Yeovil. David Element, a regular contributor of photographs for these pages, made the following comment:

A storming sustained high-speed performance coming back towards Waterloo with 13 coaches and a Class 67 on the rear. There are already some excellent film clips on YouTube (several were on line by the time we arrived home!). I timed the whole train passing the cameraman at Brookwood from one of these at about 9 seconds (which if my approximate calculations are correct would translate to a speed of 72-73mph with a load of about 572 tons if the train had been empty).

I would have thought that this terrific run would compare well with any previous performances by a Merchant Navy either in preservation or in BR service, so many congratulations to the excellent crew and everyone else involved.”
