Progress in Devon – 7

The latest report from Leaky Finders shows more good progress:-

“Starting with 35028 Clan Line, once both the new side sheets were tacked in place the boiler inspector paid a visit to witness the plates in place and to go through all the relevant paperwork relating to this aspect of the repair. With the go ahead given, the welding of the first side sheet has begun. It’s very much a team effort to undertake it all, with our very own coded welder Jowan being brilliantly supported by both Ben and Cuba who have been taking it in turns to either pass rods, grinders, pre heat the plate-work and firebox or keep the temperature up in the plate whilst the welding is undertaken. This becomes increasingly more important the more welding is done as the firebox dissipates the heat so quickly. We’re hopeful the side sheet welding will be completed by the beginning of January. We can then start fitting the new half syphons in tandem with reaming, tapping, machining and fitting the hundreds of new stays in and immediately surrounding the new side sheets. Our CNC has already been busy machining the first new stays, which are being fitted to the doorplate.”
